My book Boy at War matters because it gives a first hand account on what happened December 7, 1941. I think the most valuable idea from my book is keep your family close because Adam's dad who was on the USS Arizona went missing, and his mom and younger sister were worried sick at home. Adam survived but barely he could have easily been killed and never seen his family again. My book is a part of a trilogy this book ends with his after missing and his family wanting to move back to the mainland but they stay in Honolulu. My message is still valuable today because family is the best thing you have and you don't want to lose it.

My book is about Pearl Harbor, since the end of WWII they (Japan and The United States) have made up and became allies. I believe that after the US used their nuclear bombs Japan realized the power of the US. After Japan lost the war the US helped with social, political, economic, and military reforms to help rehabilitate Japan. I think the end of WWII was a turning point for everyone because they all took damage in different forms, but the Japanese recognized the power and the US and wanted to be with us instead of against us.
My book connects to pearl harbor directly because it is told from the view of a boy who witnessed it in Hawaii. Adam is the main character in the book, his dad is in the navy and recently got stationed in Pearl Harbor. He tells his story about moving to Hawaii and what it is like living there. He knew war with Japan was possible but they had no clue what would happen in the coming days. Adam and two of his friends are fishing in a little boat in the harbor the morning of the attack, he watches the boat (The USS Arizona) sink which his father is on at the time.

Mrs.Shelow 5th Period School Beautification Introduction Wake County only provides enough money to cover basic school beautification needs such as cutting the grass and simple landscaping. They only provide 12,500 dollars for the equipment for all 171 schools in the county. We care about this issue because everybody would like to go to and see a well maintained school. With this small budget it seems that little can be done to keep our schools looking good. We were interested in this issue because we would not want to go to a school with poor maintenance, I think everybody would rather go to a good looking school. We also did some research and found that having school gardens improves student’s attitudes toward healthy eating, we found this to very important especially with child obesity being a rising issue these days. In an article I found it says school gardens can teach a healthy lifestyle and improve academic achievement, school gardens have been “a perfect tool to provide hands-on learning experiences for any academic subject.” At schools with gardens there was a 12-15% increase in standardized test score pass rates. (Kushner,14) tside of academics gardens also teach students how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, they learn about the important role of agriculture in our communities. With the pride of growing fresh fruits and vegetables students are much more likely to try the produce they grew teaching healthier eating habits. School gardens have been around since the 1800’s and are only getting better. The Issue Our issue is our school system’s low maintenance budget. If we were to be able to expand our budget more then maybe we could afford to maintain our school better than we can with the small budget we have now. With a bigger budget there is a more broad spectrum of things to do to take care of our school and make them more appealing. Such as our hallways, when your changing classes and going to your next class, typically all you see are the school colors and and maybe trophies/awards in some spots but with a bigger budget we could make them much more appealing. Also with a bigger budget could open up to more in school and out of school activities such as more artsy type classes which could be used for students to make artwork and cool decorations we can use to make our school look more kid friendly.and appealing if potential students come to visit. People don't often come to visit our school except for a couple of groups of parents coming to check out the learning environment that their child is in sometimes but not too often. Even though it might not be that much of an impact it would still be a good thing to have a nice garden for parents and children to look at while entering or passing by. It may not mean much to some people but to parents and other visitors it is what they would like to see, a nice looking school on the inside and outside. Although it's a good idea to have the inside look more appealing it's not good to only focus on that. Having a nice balance of the way things look outside and inside is good because not as many are going to see the inside as much as the outside besides the students. The Solution Overall school beautification causes a better and more appealing learning environment. School gardens are proven to improve test scores and make school a happier place. School beautification also gets kids excited to learn about things just like the idea of school superheroes to help get kids interested in learning. Also school beautification attracts more parents to enroll their kids there because it puts off a friendly environment type of vibe showing parents that the school is good for your kids. Doing so causes more and more parents to want to enroll their children to their school. Also parents could write good reviews about the school and it’s healthy learning environment. A possible solution to the small budget is making the most out of what you have just laying around giving a use for everything and making your school look more appealing. Doing so also allows your school to open up to more activities such as creative art clubs and classes. Getting a volunteer group to go out to multiple schools in Wake County and make gardens and plant trees would help beautify the school for no cost at all. Some schools open up garden clubs but they often don’t get enough students or enough school funding. This is why a group volunteers going out to schools, especially those with bad test scores or multiple students that are overweight. Conclusion In conclusion our schools are in need of a budget increase to keep schools in the shape we need. The maintenance budget of 12,500 dollars to split between 171 schools means that there is only about 73 dollars per school per year. We found evidence that schools with gardens can help teach a healthy lifestyle such as students who grow fresh produce are more likely to try it and typically healthy foods are grown in gardens. Next we found that student’s test scores went up after making and enjoying a garden. School gardens have been around for a very long time and they can only improve with a bigger budget for improvement. Lastly school gardens teach kids how to use hands on learning to create things. But we do have ideas and ways around the low school budget. Planting trees and shaping up our garden can really improve the test scores and the grades of our students. Also having appealing and interesting things in the room can keep your students from falling a sleep because of a dull boring classroom. We also said that we can use what we have to improve our schools, for example using rocks that are laying around the school to make a cool pathway or some type of interesting artwork. Improving things like the garden is almost the same as improving the school itself because pretty gardens are an eyecatcher and will make more people feel like your school would be a good place to come to for visits. The worm is very appealing and makes the school look better, but it also keeps u thinking about your abc's. The garden with the rainbow tires may be something that grabs you and your kids attention while passing by because it's so appealing. And as for the paintings and inspirational statement this may make your parents think “Wow my kid is in good hands''. Wake County schools are seeing their smallest growth in 34 years and they need 1 billion dollars for school construction. I think we could help this issue by hosting a fund raiser and doing everything we can to help get the funds needed by wake county. This is an issue because we need schools for students to attend. I take interest in this issue because if schools cannot be built we could be in a bad situation resulting in over crowded schools.

ELA 5th Pd. 11-2-17 This I Believe Essay This I believe, everyone should play a sport. By playing a sport you can gain many valuable takeaways from playing such as making new friends, being active, and having fun. I have made lots of friends by playing various sports over the years. My dad always wanted me to play baseball and I didn’t want to try it but my dad being my dad he signed me up, little do I know baseball is all I think about now and I don’t know where I would be know if I didn’t try it. I joined a team where I only knew a few people and I was a little shy to the others, but by talking to them I made friends and now I know them very well. I am very glad I got to know them now. I think that making friends is very important and a valuable skill in life. I also think that playing a sport with a friend or multiple friends makes it better that could also go for anything like classes in school etc. Don’t hesitate to try new things I know it is hard and everyone is not always open to trying new things, even I don’t like to do it but when I do try new things almost all the time I am glad I did it. These are the lesson I have learned by playing a sport. By playing a sport you always have something to look forward to during the season. When I have baseball practices and tournaments I look forward to it but when practices and games get cancelled I generally get mad because I will be bored after school or on the weekends and I can’t play what I love. If you are someone who does not typically have things to do I would suggest you try a sport, you don’t know unless you try. Lastly you don’t have to be good to play because when I started my first season of baseball I had only one hit over the whole season and that was in the last game, so stick with it and you will get better. I still play baseball and I have gotten significantly better with practice and a good attitude towards it. There are many different leagues, sports, and levels for everyone to play at so do not be afraid to go and try something new. In conclusion by playing a sport you can make friends and exercise while playing something you enjoy. There are lots of different sports with lots of skill levels so there is no excuse to not try one. I look forward to playing so much that when games and practices get cancelled I get bummed out. There is no reason to not try something new so why not give it a try. |
